Legendary game designer Peter Molyneux, renowned for his role in shaping the god game genre and creating the Fable series, recently shared an emotional response to the gameplay trailer for the upcoming Fable reboot.

Having left Lionhead, the studio behind Fable, in 2012 after leading the design of Fable 3, Molyneux still feels a deep connection to the franchise.

“When I watched the Fable trailer, I found myself tearing up,” Molyneux expressed. “I know I might get some flak for saying that, but I’m someone who gets emotional easily. It hit me hard because this thing we created is going to live on. This world we loved building, and that others loved too, has a future.”

Molyneux has been quite impressed with the new Fable, commending Playground Games for choosing to “retell Fable 1 instead of feeling the pressure of continuing the story” and for the clever twist of having the kid’s family turn to stone.

However, like any devoted parent of a gaming franchise, Molyneux had some critiques regarding the reboot.

“There was a bit of a sterile vibe to it,” he noted. “But they have plenty of time to infuse character and that gritty feel that Fable is known for. I never saw Fable as pristine with sharp, defined angles. It’s more chaotic, reminiscent of what Old England might have been—less about straight lines and more about crinkles, with oversized belts and boots that add to the character.”

Ultimately, Molyneux confirmed he “absolutely” intends to play the new Fable upon its release, “not as someone looking for flaws, but as someone who genuinely loves and cherishes that universe.”

Fable is set to launch on Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC this Autumn.

Why Playground Games’ ambitious open-world Fable reboot represents a fresh start for the series: “This has to be Playground’s Fable.”
