Player Exploits Out-of-Bounds Area to Sabotage Team After Raid Boss Defeat, Sparking Outrage from Bungie
Entering a boss fight with The Compiler in Cryo Archive is no walk in the park. The end-game raid map demands players to gather batteries, key cards, and hack vaults through multiple runs before they can even think about facing the final challenge. To make things even more intense, players must fend off rival human teams during this process. It’s a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience, so you can imagine the frustration of completing it only to be taken out by a player exploiting an out-of-bounds glitch.
Recently, a streamer known as NAPainter dove into Cryo Archive, used a bug to slip into the final chamber where The Compiler resides, and lay in wait for another team to finish the fight. Once they thought they had conquered the encounter, NAPainter and his crew ambushed them. Instead of walking away with some of the game’s best loot, the unsuspecting team found themselves gunned down and left behind.
“Cryo Clip of the Week goes to the most HEINOUS, EVIL, and DISGUSTING thing I have EVER done in any video game,” NAPainter tweeted. “If you can get Out of Bounds and you can get into the Compiler loot room. And you can just camp in the room for someone to do compiler… and then kill them.” He later reflected that he should have allowed the team to self-revive, and many players are now calling for him to face a permanent ban.
One content creator has already labeled this incident as the game’s “most controversial moment” to date, with players citing it as a prime example of the brutal luck that makes Cryo Archive, and Marathon as a whole, a tough experience for many. While exploits like this were somewhat common in other games, they can be particularly damaging in a PVP environment where losing means losing your hard-earned gear. The developers are aware of this and have promised to address the issue and consider sanctions for such exploits in the future.
Following the incident, a player shared a video showcasing how they exploited a map issue to access the Compiler room and ambush a team after they completed the encounter.
“We will have this issue fixed before Cryo Archive returns,” the development team stated.
“In the past, we have not penalized players for going out of bounds, but this case has negatively impacted others significantly, so we’ll be reviewing our policies and providing more details soon,” they added. “While we don’t want to punish players for accidental bugs, we will clarify the boundaries regarding the use of such glitches that could lead to griefing.”
In addition to fixing the bug, the developers also rewarded the affected team with extra loot to compensate for the ambush. The compensation was so substantial that one player reported they couldn’t even claim it despite having over 200 open inventory slots. Meanwhile, the developers have teased the upcoming addition of Marathon’s final new activity for season 1: Ranked Cryo, promising an even more intense experience ahead.
