PlayStation Creator Recognizes the Value of Physical Media for Gamers

Ken Kutaragi, the founder of PlayStation and former chairman of Sony, has shared his thoughts on a contentious issue in the gaming world: the decline of physical media. While he acknowledges the frustrations of gamers, Kutaragi, as a businessman, believes there’s little justification for continuing disc production.

With technology advancing at a breakneck pace, the gaming landscape is shifting towards an all-digital future, which may signal the end of physical media. Among the major console manufacturers, Sony was the first to announce plans to move away from discs. Microsoft has yet to clarify whether the next Xbox will feature a disc drive, while Nintendo has assured fans that it will maintain support for physical media.

Recently, Sony has faced criticism for its controversial stance on physical games. Kutaragi, who departed the company in 2007, still aligns with some of Sony’s perspectives but also empathizes with gamers. In a recent interview, he emphasized that he envisioned a network-connected console from the outset, believing it to be the future of the PlayStation platform.

As network-connected consoles become increasingly prevalent, access to digital media expands, leading to a diminished need for physical discs. However, as Sony has previously pointed out, players don’t truly own the games in their digital libraries. Purchasing a digital game only grants a license that can be revoked, whereas physical media provides a tangible copy that is harder to take away. Kutaragi noted that “physical discs have become a metaphor for owning games.”

He understands that with physical media, “people feel like they will keep their content,” which is why he empathizes with gamers’ strong feelings on the subject. Nonetheless, from a business perspective, he believes that maintaining physical media is not “economically reasonable.” Transitioning away from disc production allows companies like Sony to reduce costs and boost profits. Despite his more sympathetic view on physical media, Kutaragi echoes the sentiments of Sony’s CFO, stating that most sales are now digital and that moving to an all-digital model “won’t affect PlayStation as a business.”

There are unconfirmed rumors suggesting that the disc-based PlayStation 5 may issue warnings to players about the impending end of physical games.
