PlayStation Portal Update Enhances Cloud Streaming for Graphics Enthusiasts

Sony’s quirky yet enjoyable PlayStation 5 accessory, the PlayStation Portal, is set to receive some exciting upgrades. In a recent blog announcement, Sony detailed an upcoming update that will introduce three key enhancements to this remote gaming device: a 1080p High Quality Mode, improved Cloud Streaming capabilities, and a more streamlined onboarding process for new users.

This update is scheduled to roll out globally to all Portal users on March 18.

While the Portal has been capable of running games at 1080p, the new High Quality Mode will utilize more data to enhance the overall experience and visual quality. Previously, users experienced occasional lag and connection issues, making this update a welcome improvement—provided your home network can handle the increased demand.

The other enhancements focus on usability and interface improvements: Cloud Streaming search and product detail pages will be more efficient, and players will receive clear on-screen notifications for trophies and game invites.

For those setting up the Portal for the first time, the process could take around 15 to 20 minutes. The March 18 update aims to simplify this with a QR code sign-in option for your PlayStation account, making the initial setup a bit smoother and more intuitive, even if it doesn’t drastically cut down the time required.

Despite initial doubts about this second-screen device, the PS Portal has reportedly sold around 2 million units by the end of 2024. According to PlayStation’s senior manager of product management, Takuro Fushimi, the user base continues to expand, with a notable portion of these players being PlayStation Plus subscribers.

“Since our last update in November, we’ve seen strong momentum on PS Portal,” Fushimi noted. “Cloud Streaming monthly users grew by 162% year-over-year in January, and over 50% of PS Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers – reflecting growing engagement with the cloud experience.”

In a market where console hardware and accessories are seeing price increases, the PS Portal remains at $199, the same price it launched with in 2023. While it may not be the handheld successor that fans of the PS Vita were hoping for, it offers a solid option for those with a substantial PS5 library or a PS Plus subscription, making it a great choice for handheld or second-screen gaming.
