PlayStation Speaks Out, but the Response is Unfavorable
PlayStation and other Sony brands have been pretty quiet on social media since July 1, the day they revealed plans to stop producing physical discs starting in 2028. This news sparked a wave of backlash across nearly all of Sony’s social media channels, even those unrelated to gaming. On Tuesday, PlayStation finally broke its silence to unveil the new FlexStrike fight stick, and the reactions have been predictably intense.
In just the first couple of hours after PlayStation’s return to social media, the post on X garnered over 30,000 replies and nearly 9,000 quotes. The same announcement on Instagram attracted more than 6,000 angry comments. Almost all of these responses are negative, with users holding PlayStation and Sony accountable for the unpopular decision regarding physical discs. As I scrolled through the comments, I couldn’t find a single one that engaged with the video showcasing the features of the wireless FlexStrike fight stick.
The reactions, predominantly negative, vary in their intensity. Many commenters are reiterating their desire for physical games, insisting that digital isn’t the way forward. This frustration is understandable, especially since the announcement came just days after Sony removed over 500 movies from PlayStation libraries, reminding users that digital “ownership” can be revoked at any time.
Another significant portion of the responses reflects disbelief and anger at PlayStation’s return to social media without addressing the backlash. One comment reads, “Seriously, the strategy is to ignore millions of us players? Not a single mention, even just to show a minimum of respect? Ostrich strategy and that’s it?” While Sony may hope fans will forget about the physical disc decision, they have so far refused to let it go. An online petition urging Sony to reverse the announcement has already gathered over 175,000 signatures. As of now, Sony and PlayStation have not acknowledged or responded to the criticism.
2028 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Sony.
