Plex Alienates Users with $500 Hike on Lifetime Subscription Fee

Plex, the popular media server streaming software, has announced a significant price hike for its lifetime Plex Pass subscription, jumping from $250 to $750. This change, set to take effect on July 1, is aimed at reflecting the “real, ongoing value” of the service and supporting future development plans.

On May 19, Plex revealed the upcoming price increase for the lifetime Plex Pass, which unlocks all premium features, including the ability for users to let friends and family stream their personal movie and show libraries from anywhere without needing a Plex Remote Pass. For many users with extensive media collections, the Plex Pass is essential for enjoying and sharing content seamlessly.

Initially, Plex offered the Plex Pass for a one-time fee of $100, providing lifetime access. However, as the costs of maintaining and enhancing its features grew, the price was raised to $250. Now, just a year later, the price is set to soar to $750.

In a blog post, Plex explained, “When we first started, we were movie and TV fans who wanted to create something great for people like us. We chose to offer a Lifetime subscription early on because we knew many of our customers preferred a higher one-time fee for reliable software.”

Plex considered discontinuing the lifetime option altogether, as recurring subscription fees are more sustainable for long-term development. However, they decided to keep it available, albeit at a price that reflects the ongoing value of the software they are committed to enhancing.

The announcement has sparked a wave of negative feedback, with many former users citing rising costs as a reason for abandoning the platform in favor of alternatives. Some are urging Plex to return to its simpler, more user-friendly roots to avoid losing its customer base.

“Are you guys out of your minds? Raising prices and adding features no one asked for. You’ve turned a simple, easy-to-use app into a bloated mess, and now it’s even more expensive. Please get back to basics,” one user lamented. Another simply stated, “Feels like the beginning of the end for Plex.”

For those who already hold a lifetime Plex Pass, there will be no changes to their subscription. Plex also confirmed that the prices for annual and monthly subscriptions will remain unchanged. This price increase will only impact new subscribers starting July 1, so if you’ve been considering setting up a Plex server to share your movie collection with friends and family, now might be the time to secure a lifetime Plex Pass at the current price before the hike. Alternatively, you could explore options like JellyFin or just stick to buying Blu-Rays and inviting friends over for movie nights.
