Pokémon Go Location Taken Down from Epstein Island Amid Backlash
Pokémon Go players have stumbled upon a surprising digital PokéStop on Little Saint James, a location infamous for its ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This private island is generally off-limits to the public, yet until recently, players could visit this notorious site to catch Pokémon, including Pikachu.
In Pokémon Go, players can capture and battle creatures by visiting real-world landmarks, which are usually safe and accessible. However, fans can also submit their own PokéStop locations, leading to some unexpected and potentially controversial additions to the game.
The first reports of a PokéStop at a sundial on Little Saint James surfaced about a year ago. While the exact date of its introduction is unclear, estimates suggest it may have appeared around 2020 or 2021, based on data from Ingress, the AR platform that underpins Pokémon Go. The in-game image linked to this PokéStop seems to originate from an older YouTube video featuring drone footage of the island. Niantic has not commented on the removal of this PokéStop.
Players who managed to spoof their location to access Epstein’s island reported encountering standard Pokémon. However, given the island’s dark history, some players sought out specific creatures, like Lopunny, a Pokémon often associated with controversial themes, to highlight the unusual context of their capture.
Despite the known presence of the Little Saint James PokéStop, it reportedly remained in the game until around February 9. Increased public interest in Epstein’s case, especially following the release of over 3.5 million documents, may have drawn attention to the PokéStop. Reports indicated that players flocked to the island in large numbers, raising concerns about a children’s game being linked to such a notorious figure, even if players had to cheat to access it.
This scrutiny led some to dig through the Epstein files for any mention of Pokémon Go. Interestingly, it turns out Epstein was aware of the game and even expressed admiration for it. In a conversation with Deepak Chopra, he suggested that Chopra create an app that would allow users to detect auras through their phones, claiming it would be a market hit.
Chopra acknowledged the idea’s potential but mentioned he was already exploring virtual reality technology with the Oculus VR headset, noting the excitement it generated among participants at his retreat.
While this is just one of many exchanges found in the files, it’s surreal to think that Epstein might have engaged with the gaming world, even as he was involved in his heinous activities.
