Pokémon’s Upcoming Lego Sets Look Great, But Their Prices Are Shocking

The collaboration between Pokémon and Lego is rolling on, with exciting new sets on the horizon. Among the upcoming releases are blocky versions of popular Pokémon like Rayquaza, Arcanine, and Munchlax. But what’s really catching attention is a set that pays tribute to the human characters from the Pokémon universe, and it’s particularly impressive.

The new sets feature the same style as previous Lego Pokémon releases, each containing several hundred pieces that come together to form a large, blocky representation of the featured Pokémon. While I’m not entirely sold on the aesthetics of some of these designs, I understand that the charm of Lego lies in the building process and showcasing the final product. However, I personally wouldn’t choose these models for my favorite Pokémon. The prices for Rayquaza, Arcanine, and Munchlax are set at $130, $110, and $70, respectively.

On the other hand, I’m really excited about a lavish recreation of Professor Oak’s lab, where players select their starter Pokémon. This $300 set is designed to resemble a Poké Ball, and when opened, it reveals Oak alongside three Poké Balls, ready for a new trainer’s adventure. The set also includes a small battle arena featuring mini figures of Red, the protagonist from the original games, and a Bug Catcher trainer battling with Pikachu and Eevee. I’d love to see more mini-figures of trainers from across the Pokémon series in the future, though I hope they won’t all be tied to expensive sets.

Additionally, there’s an $80 oversized minifigure of Red coming out, which I’m not as keen on since it doesn’t have the same polished look as the standard mini-figures. However, it’s been noted that this figure is scaled to work with some of the Smart Play Pokémon sets launching next month, which could lead to some fun scene-building opportunities.

Most of these sets are set to release on August 1, but if you’re just after a Red minifigure, Lego will also offer those as keychains starting October 1, alongside the oversized Red, though pricing details for the keychains haven’t been revealed yet.
