Popular isekai anime switches studios once more as season 4 is officially announced.
KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World has become a standout title in the isekai anime scene, known for its sharp humor and clever subversion of genre clichés. Its ability to self-deprecate has earned it a dedicated fanbase, but the series has also seen a shift in production studios over the years, and season 4 is no different.
On July 26, it was revealed on the series’ official website that season 4 of KonoSuba is set to premiere in 2027. This announcement is exciting for fans, but it also comes with the news that production will transition from studio Drive, which handled season 3, to Studio ENGI. This change marks the fourth studio to take on the series, following Studio Deen’s work on the first two seasons and J.C. Staff’s animation of the movie KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson.
While it’s not unusual for anime to switch studios between seasons, consistency is often seen as beneficial. Series like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia have thrived under the same studios (Mappa and Bones, respectively), allowing for a cohesive artistic vision. However, shows like Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan have demonstrated that a change in production can still maintain high quality.
In the case of KonoSuba, this latest studio switch is likely influenced by the fact that ENGI is owned by Kadokawa, the publisher that holds the series’ intellectual property. As Kadokawa expands its reach, it seems to be bringing more of its productions in-house. ENGI is a relatively new player in the industry, and KonoSuba represents its most significant franchise. Season 4 will serve as a crucial test for the studio. Fortunately, Takaomi Kanasaki, who directed the first season, will return for this new installment. If that name sounds familiar, he also contributed to the acclaimed anime Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Fans of KonoSuba are eagerly anticipating the return of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness, hoping their antics will grace screens again not long into 2027.
