Prime Video is turning Stephen King’s lesser-known 1980 horror short into a six-episode limited series.
It’s an exciting time for fans of Stephen King: Prime Video has officially announced a limited series adaptation of King’s horror-sci-fi short story, Crouch End. This tale, which pays tribute to H.P. Lovecraft, first appeared in the anthology New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos and was later included in King’s collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes. Uniquely, it takes place in London rather than King’s usual setting of Maine.
The series’ synopsis teases: “London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy. When global movie star Doris Freeman rushes into a London police station claiming that strange occurrences are linked to her husband’s disappearance, police inspector Ted Vetter must determine if she’s telling the truth, if she could be a murderer, or if something even more sinister is at work…”
This six-part adaptation is helmed by Paul Tomalin (Bodies) and directed by Tom Shankland (Berlin Noir). The production team includes Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, with executive producers such as Paul Tomalin, Ben Irving, Rebecca Keane, Damien Timmer, and Tom Shankland.
Crouch End isn’t new to adaptations; it was previously featured as an episode in TNT’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King in 2006, starring Eion Bailey and Claire Forlani. While the original story is brief enough for a single episode, this new adaptation promises to delve deeper into themes of grief, trauma, and cosmic horror.
“I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever,” Shankland expressed. “The opportunity to collaborate with this fantastic team and bring his brilliant London mystery to life is incredibly exciting – Crouch End will be cinematic, original, and thought-provoking.”
Tomalin shared his enthusiasm as well: “After reading ‘Crouch End’ years ago, Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my dreams ever since. It’s an honor to adapt it with the amazing teams at Mammoth, Fifth Season, and Amazon, alongside director Tom Shankland. I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this gripping story to the screen.”
In addition to its supernatural mystery and crime-thriller elements, Crouch End also taps into the Cthulhu Mythos, promising a blend of grotesque imagery and horror alongside its narrative.
Nicole Clemens, vice president of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, stated: “Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time, and we’re excited to bring his Lovecraftian tale to life in London with Crouch End. Paul Tomalin offers a unique, character-driven vision for the series, and with Tom Shankland directing, plus the top-notch production teams at Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, this show will captivate audiences worldwide with its intense crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”
As of now, Crouch End does not have a confirmed release date.
