Professor Layton and the New World of Steam Sets Its Release Date at Last

After a long wait, the first new entry in the Professor Layton series in nearly a decade finally has a release date: December 10, 2026, as revealed in today’s Nintendo Direct.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was initially announced back in 2023, but it didn’t come with a specific release date. It has been showcased multiple times since then, originally slated for 2025 before being pushed to this year. The game is set in a steampunk-inspired American town called Steam Bison, where Professor Layton is called upon by his former student, Luke. True to the series’ roots, this will be a point-and-click adventure filled with logic puzzles. This time around, the puzzles are crafted by QuizKnock, a Japanese quiz media group, following the passing of the original puzzle designer, Akira Tago, in 2016.

Tago’s passing is likely a significant factor in the long absence of the Professor Layton franchise. The last mainline game featuring him was the prequel, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, released way back in 2013. Since then, there have been a few spin-offs and crossovers, including Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, which focused on Layton’s daughter, Katrielle. Additionally, developer Level-5 experienced a notable slowdown in releases between 2019 and 2024, particularly in the U.S., which may have contributed to Layton’s quiet period.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam serves as a direct sequel to Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, a title that debuted on Nintendo DS and mobile back in 2010. If you want to refresh your memory of that story, it’s still available on mobile, so you won’t need to hunt down a physical copy.
