PS5 Emulator Achieves Milestone: Boots GTA V Menus and Runs 3D Games

In recent weeks, several PlayStation 5 emulators have made notable strides in their development. Notably, KytyPS5 has reached a point where it can boot up and run some 3D games, including the menus of Grand Theft Auto V. While it can’t yet play the game in full, this progress is significant, especially with the ongoing debate among players about Sony’s push against physical media and the absence of a PC port for GTA 6.

Reports indicate that KytyPS5 can now access the PS5 version of GTA V, allowing users to navigate the menu and settings. Although the emulator isn’t capable of running the game itself—given that a native PC version exists—this achievement highlights the team’s advancements. Since Grand Theft Auto 6 utilizes similar technology from Rockstar, the groundwork laid by getting GTA V operational could potentially aid in running the sequel on KytyPS5. However, it’s likely that the legal teams at Take-Two and Rockstar won’t be thrilled about this development.

KytyPS5 has also demonstrated the ability to run the PS5 versions of Quake 2, Pac-Man World, and Powerwash Simulator. While this doesn’t mean these games are fully playable or free of issues, it does indicate that KytyPS5 is making headway toward the ultimate goal of supporting complete 3D retail PS5 titles.

The current focus for the developers is on enhancing compatibility and resolving boot-up issues. Future efforts will shift toward ensuring that games run smoothly without visual glitches and at appropriate frame rates. However, it seems unlikely that KytyPS5 will be a viable option for those looking to play backups or homebrew games anytime soon, especially considering that the leading PS4 emulator, ShadPS4, has only managed to run about 15 percent of the console’s library after a decade of development.

As noted, the lack of a PC version for GTA 6 and Sony’s move away from physical games appear to be driving emulator developers to dive deeper into PS5 emulation. Projects like SharpEmu, KytyPS5, and RPCSX have all reported promising progress in recent weeks.
