PS6 Release Date Still Uncertain, Even for Sony

The PlayStation 6 was once rumored to be aiming for a holiday 2027 launch, but some speculate it may now be pushed to 2028, coinciding with Sony’s plans to phase out disc support for new PlayStation titles. CEO Hiroki Totoki has indicated that even the company itself is uncertain about the timeline.

In a recent profile, the executive who temporarily took the reins of PlayStation after Jim Ryan’s retirement in 2024 confirmed that no official launch date for the PS6 has been established, even within the company. This uncertainty comes amid ongoing supply chain issues, dubbed “RAMageddon,” which are wreaking havoc across the gaming and tech industries.

These shortages have led to significant price increases for the PS5, now five years into its lifecycle, and many anticipate that this trend will persist through at least 2027, possibly extending into 2028. Even if the AI-driven demand that has contributed to these shortages begins to wane, it remains unclear whether prices will decrease or simply stabilize at their current levels.

During its latest earnings call, Sony assured investors that it has secured enough RAM to meet its projected sales for the PS5 through March 2027. However, with reports indicating that all RAM production for next year is already sold out, the situation leading up to the PS6 launch remains unpredictable.

The company has previously informed shareholders that it does not intend to sell new hardware at a significant loss, implying that the PS6 may come with a price tag considerably higher than the $500 PS5, which launched during the pandemic. This has raised concerns that what could have been a more budget-friendly generation of hardware might instead turn out to be the most expensive yet, potentially debuting at $1,000 or more.
