Rainbow Six Siege Hackers Distribute Billions in In-Game Currency to Players
Imagine firing up your favorite game and discovering an absurd amount of credits in your account—enough to buy everything in the store for years. That’s exactly what happened to several players in Rainbow Six Siege over the weekend. These credits were real and amounted to millions in actual currency, thanks to a clever hack that caught Ubisoft off guard.
Rainbow Six Siege, a free-to-play tactical shooter that launched in 2015, still boasts a vibrant community of players who log in daily to defuse bombs and rescue hostages. Despite its robust anti-cheat measures designed to keep the game secure, an attack occurred on December 27, just after Christmas, that slipped through the cracks.
On that Saturday, players took to social media, bewildered by the sudden influx of billions in Renown, the game’s currency. Some quickly realized something was off and chose not to spend their newfound wealth for fear of repercussions, while others dove right in, taking advantage of the situation. The sheer volume of transactions caused the in-game shop to struggle under the weight of players eager to spend their ill-gotten gains. Many reported buying everything they could while the credits were still active.
“I opened the game after like two weeks of not playing and now have 2 billion renown,” one player shared on Reddit. “GREATEST day of my life,” another chimed in, feeling like a “RICH BILLIONAIRE.”
“Siegemarket crash incoming,” joked another player.
Ubisoft eventually intervened, taking Rainbow Six Siege offline to address the situation. A few hours later, they reassured players that no bans would be issued for spending the credits during the hack, but they were working on reversing the unauthorized transactions. The following day, Ubisoft announced they were conducting “extensive quality control tests” to ensure everything was functioning properly.
“The team is focused on getting players back into the game as quickly as possible,” Ubisoft stated on their official account. “Please know that this matter is being handled with extreme care, and therefore, timing cannot be guaranteed. We will provide another update as soon as we know more. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we continue to tackle this.”
Now that things have returned to normal, players are left with lingering questions. Ubisoft hasn’t provided details on how the hack occurred or if any sensitive account information was compromised. One fan in a discussion thread asked, “Have they even mentioned the severity of the breach?” Others expressed sympathy for the timing of the hack, which coincided with a major holiday when fewer developers were available to address the issues.
