The beloved Rayman is making a comeback with the Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition, set to launch on February 13, just hours after its announcement. This remake of the classic 1995 platformer has been highly anticipated, and as a fan who played it relentlessly in the ’90s, it’s exciting to see this iconic character get the recognition he deserves. With Digital Eclipse leading the charge alongside Ubisoft, this is a dream come true for fans.
As a kid, I was drawn in by the vibrant visuals and catchy soundtrack, but I quickly learned how challenging this meticulously designed platformer could be. It’s known for its difficulty compared to the more forgiving 3D titles that followed. The remake promises to honor the original, featuring five versions of the game (MS-DOS, Atari Jaguar, PS1, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance), a re-recorded soundtrack, and a treasure trove of extras.
The stunning sprite art in Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition retains its charming, chunky style. While Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends ramped up the pace, the original game has our cheerful hero casually navigating levels, all while dodging a barrage of projectiles and formidable foes in his quest to rescue caged creatures.
Rayman’s gameplay revolves around skillfully dodging hazards and striking enemies during their vulnerable moments with his iconic fist. Players will need to utilize bouncy berries and master platforming under pressure. This remake is a perfect opportunity to show my friends that I wasn’t exaggerating about the challenge of this adventure. Fortunately, the new rewind feature, along with infinite lives and invincibility options, allows you to tailor your experience and make revisiting this classic as enjoyable as possible.
New additions include an interactive documentary featuring never-before-seen concept art and design documents presented in a timeline format. Players can also explore a previously unreleased SNES port prototype and tackle a whopping 120 bonus levels collected from various level packs over the years (some of which were particularly tricky back in the day). It’s fantastic to see this retro hero get a chance to shine again, as the original Rayman often gets overshadowed. Priced at just £19.99, this is a must-play for both returning fans and newcomers alike.
