Release Date for Season 3 of The Rings of Power Unveiled

We’re heading back to Middle-earth, but not just yet. Amazon revealed on Monday that its high-budget fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will return for season 3 on November 11, 2026. Set during the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic saga—long before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings—the series explores Sauron’s ascent to power as he creates the rings that will ultimately enslave Middle-earth. Along with the announcement, a new image of the Dark Lord, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, was shared.

“From the very beginning, this series has captured the scale, ambition, and cinematic storytelling that define Prime Video’s biggest global series,” stated Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios. “The incredible response from millions of fans worldwide has shown that this journey through Middle-earth continues to resonate, and that momentum has only increased as we approach Season Three.”

According to a confirmed synopsis, season 3 of Rings of Power will make a significant leap in the timeline. “Jumping forward several years from the events of Season Two, Season Three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to forge the One Ring that will give him the advantage he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will, and ultimately rule all of Middle-earth.”

So, what can we expect in season 3? By the time The Rings of Power resumes, Middle-earth will be in a chaotic state. The elves will realize that the charming jewelry maker is actually the Dark Lord in disguise, prompting Sauron to respond in true villainous fashion—by launching a full-scale military campaign across the elven realm of Eregion.

In Tolkien’s lore, this saga unfolds over several years, but the showrunners seem to be accelerating the timeline for budget and pacing reasons. In broad strokes: Sauron attacks Eregion, tortures Celebrimbor for the Rings, and sends the surviving elves fleeing in all directions like fantasy evacuees escaping a disastrous tech startup. Elrond escapes north with refugees and establishes Rivendell, also known as Imladris, while the dwarves of Khazad-dûm make a brief appearance to help thwart Sauron before retreating underground for several millennia.

The primary source for much of this narrative is Unfinished Tales, which might be worth diving into in the months leading up to season 3.

Earlier this year, there were significant concerns about whether showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay would have the opportunity to bring this history to life on screen—Rings of Power is one of the most expensive television projects ever, and viewership has been inconsistent. However, the passion for The Lord of the Rings from key figures certainly plays a role. So, while we may be setting sail into the west a bit later than expected, season 3 is definitely on the horizon.
