Renowned Japanese Visual Novel Writer Begins Palliative Care for Throat Cancer

Jun Maeda, a prominent figure in the visual novel scene known for both his storytelling and music composition, has opted for palliative care following a diagnosis of throat cancer. This news was shared by Visual Arts on their social media.

In their announcement, Visual Arts revealed that Maeda chose palliative care over chemotherapy to “conserve his strength and devote himself to his creative work.” At the time of his diagnosis, he was actively writing for the free-to-play mobile RPG Heaven Burns Red and working on an undisclosed music project.

For those who immersed themselves in video games or anime during the early 2000s, Maeda’s influence is unmistakable. He crafted the main narratives for visual novels that became foundational to the “moe” subgenre in the West. His notable works include Air, Clannad, and Kanon, all of which were adapted into anime that sparked countless memes for their emotional impact. He also penned the anime Angel Beats!, further solidifying his reputation for creating tear-jerking stories. Additionally, Maeda composed music for his projects, including the iconic “Tori No Uta,” the theme song for the Air anime, which stands as a contender for the greatest anime opening of all time.

Visual Arts has provided contact details for fans wishing to send messages of support to Maeda. They noted that he has completed work on Heaven Burns Red up to chapter six, indicating his intention to continue writing and composing for as long as possible. “Maeda is currently hospitalized, but even under these circumstances, he remains strongly determined to devote himself to creative work through to the very end.”
