Renowned Visual Novel Creator Unveils AI-Driven Quake Clone

The game development studio Mages has carved out a niche as one of the most cherished creators of Japanese visual novels. Titles like Steins;Gate have not only gained popularity as games but have also successfully transitioned into other formats, including anime adaptations. While the studio isn’t shy about exploring different genres—having released a rhythm game last year—it has primarily been recognized for its meticulous approach to visual novels and for crafting smaller spin-offs based on recent anime. This makes the announcement of their latest title, Juggernaut, particularly surprising, as it is an AI-driven homage to Quake.

Revealed unexpectedly through social media, Juggernaut invites players to “jump back to the 90s” with a game that “looks retro, plays retro, because it is retro.” A brief look at the game evokes a mashup of Quake and Doom, featuring zombies and a straightforward goal of eliminating 5,000 enemies. The distinct AI-generated art style adds an unsettling quality to the visuals. According to the studio’s AI disclosure on the game’s Steam page, their transition into this unfamiliar genre has been facilitated by extensive use of AI technologies. They reveal that 100 percent of the game’s source code and effects, along with 60 percent of the graphics and 50 percent of the sound, have been produced using generative AI models.

The announcement has sparked a wave of negative reactions from English-speaking fans, who not only criticize the game’s aesthetics but also express astonishment at the heavy reliance on AI in its creation. However, Mages is not the only Japanese studio exploring generative AI; a report from last year indicated that 51 percent of Japanese game developers were experimenting with this technology, with some, like Level 5, openly demonstrating how generative assets have been integrated into their projects.

Still, few have ventured as far as releasing a fully AI-generated game like Juggernaut. It’s hard to understand why a player would choose this title over the classic games it draws inspiration from. The game is available for wishlisting, though a release date has yet to be announced for those curious enough to give it a try.
