Resident Evil Requiem Director Hints at Leon Kennedy’s New Homecoming

Since the release of Resident Evil Requiem on February 27, fans obsessed with Leon have been buzzing about the meaning behind the simple gold ring he briefly sports on his left hand during the game’s final moments. The obvious assumption is that Leon is married, but who is the lucky partner? Throughout the story, Leon never mentions being in a relationship.

Despite the rampant theories circulating online, Capcom has not clarified the ring’s meaning. In a recent chat, Requiem’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, didn’t provide a definitive answer about Leon’s marital status, but he did emphasize that the ring carries emotional weight for the beloved Italian-Irish-American zombie slayer.

“The answer will become clear someday, but not just yet,” Nakanishi shared. “What we wanted to convey in the final scene is simple: Leon now has a ‘place to go home to,’ and we hope you can imagine the peaceful moments he spends there. Leon is a man who says very little about the things that truly matter, but he would sacrifice himself without a second thought to save a life right in front of him. So what does his ring signify? Resolve? Or a vow? He may never voice the answer himself, but for now, after finishing a long battle, he has a ‘place to go home to.’ Isn’t that enough?”

While this doesn’t confirm that Leon is married to a Resident Evil character like Ada or Claire, it does shed some light on his life beyond the events of Requiem. He could have found the ring among the countless corpses he’s encountered over the years, or it might be a treasured Kennedy family heirloom. However, Nakanishi’s description suggests that neither scenario is likely. If Leon has a “home” where he enjoys “peaceful moments,” it strongly hints that he’s living with someone who eagerly awaits his return. It’s curious that he seemingly never felt the need to reach out to this person during his adventure with Grace. Perhaps he was too busy crafting witty one-liners to throw at Victor Gideon, which is certainly a valid use of his time.

If the most straightforward interpretations of “home” and “vow” don’t apply, “resolve” opens up an intriguing possibility. Maybe the person Leon cares for issued him an ultimatum: get rid of that awful neck rash that’s messing with your brain before we take this relationship to the next level. It’s a perfectly reasonable request! After all, he only puts that ring back on once the mission is complete.
