Resident Evil Requiem Writer Hints at Upcoming DLC Features
Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem will receive story DLC, but details have been scarce. Recently, a writer involved in the project shared some intriguing insights about what players can expect from the upcoming expansion. It appears that the narrative will continue to delve into the character of Oswell Spencer, hinting at connections to a potential remake of Resident Evil 5.
Fans of the franchise are likely familiar with Spencer, the founder of the Umbrella Corporation and the namesake of the mansion featured in the first game. He’s been depicted as a villain throughout the series, meeting his end in Resident Evil 5. However, Requiem surprised many by revisiting him through flashbacks that painted a more complex picture of his character, suggesting he may have sought redemption in his later years. This narrative twist seems to be part of a broader strategy by Capcom for the Resident Evil series.
During an appearance on the Distance Nerding podcast at Meadowlark Comic Con, Requiem writer Haris Orkin mentioned that there’s an arc for Spencer in Requiem that aims to deepen players’ understanding of him, adding, “In the DLC you will understand it even further.” He quickly noted that he might have revealed too much. This aligns with speculation that players could return to the Spencer Mansion in the DLC, potentially offering new insights into the events leading up to the first game.
Spencer’s portrayal in Requiem raises questions about continuity, especially when compared to his depiction in Resident Evil 5’s Lost in Nightmares DLC, where he appears unrepentant. The flashbacks in Requiem suggest a desire for atonement, which could lead Capcom to use a Resident Evil 5 remake to clarify the series’ lore.
A remake of Resident Evil 5 seems highly likely, given the success of previous remakes and the limited number of mainline titles left to reimagine. While earlier remakes have made subtle changes to the story, a Resident Evil 5 remake could offer a chance to redefine the canon entirely. This could establish the remake as the definitive version, allowing Capcom to address various thematic issues present in the original game.
