Revamped Footage of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Enhances Visual Appeal
Video game remakes often spark the same question: Did we really need this? In the case of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the answer is increasingly leaning towards “yes,” especially after the latest gameplay clips shared recently.
Black Flag Resynced is a remake of the 2013 classic, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, which had been the subject of speculation for quite some time before its official announcement in March. In April, more details emerged, revealing that this remake would be a complete overhaul of the original game, set in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 1700s. Along with stunning new visuals, Black Flag Resynced aims to address some of the game’s more outdated mechanics, like those frustrating tailing missions.
However, the most significant change Black Flag Resynced appears to bring, based on the latest videos, is a shift back to the core gameplay style that fans have been missing in recent years. The Assassin’s Creed franchise is often viewed as having two distinct eras: the stealth-action titles from 2007 to 2015 (from the original Assassin’s Creed to Syndicate) and the open-world RPGs from 2017 to 2025 (from Origins to Shadows). While both eras have their strengths, recent footage suggests that Black Flag Resynced will feel more like the earlier games rather than the stat-heavy RPGs of the last decade.
In two clips, we see protagonist Edward Kenway dispatching three enemies in just a couple of hits, health bars aside. If you’ve played the more recent entries, this combat sequence will feel familiar, showcasing everything from the hidden blade to Kenway’s rope weapon, reminiscent of the series’ earlier style.
In a blog post accompanying the new footage, it was noted that Ubisoft aimed to preserve “Edward’s responsive movement from the original game” while making adjustments to enhance the overall fluidity. For example, players can roll upon landing to maintain speed when jumping off ledges, and there’s a speed boost after climbing up a ledge, all designed to keep the action flowing. New zip lines have also been added to the urban environments, adding another layer of mobility.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is set to launch on July 9 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Notably, this remaster will not include DLC or multiplayer features.
