Rick and Morty Spinoff on HBO Max Gets Early Renewal for Season 2 Due to Strong Reception
Rick and Morty’s first spinoff, President Curtis, is set to debut on July 26, right after the season 9 finale of Rick and Morty. Adult Swim is so confident in the series that it has already secured a second season renewal. This announcement was made during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, featuring co-creators and executive producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, along with cast members Keith David, Stephanie Beatriz, and Jim Rash.
“President Curtis quickly proved himself worthy of another term!” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen. “With Keith David’s uniquely charming performance and the creativity of Dan, James, and the entire team, this series and this President are exactly what audiences need more of — even if they don’t realize it yet.”
President Andre Curtis, voiced by David, has been a recurring character on Rick and Morty, often serving as a counterpoint to Rick Sanchez. The spinoff has been in development since 2021 and follows Curtis as he navigates bizarre threats to the United States, including alien invaders, an ancient witch, and French super soldiers.
Harmon described the show’s vision, saying, “The scope of the show, in my mind, was always going to be more The X-Files than Doctor Who, almost as if you’re focusing in and increasing the resolution of something that would otherwise be vast and more explorable. Everything’s taking place on Earth, but there is so much to experience on Earth.”
Similar to Rick and Morty, which alternates between standalone stories and episodes that expand its multiverse, the first season of President Curtis will dedicate several episodes to character backstories. This includes exploring how Curtis’ chief of staff Banks became a cyborg and Special Agent O’Doyle’s troubled relationship with his leprechaun mother, while also introducing villains and storylines that are likely to return in the next season.
“One thing you can say about President Curtis is there’s never a dull moment around him,” David shared. “I love the fact that you get to also explore some of the personal things outside of the office and see how it then influences what goes on in the office.”
President Curtis premieres Sunday night on Adult Swim and will be available for streaming on HBO Max the following morning.
