Ridley Scott Makes His Mark on the Post-Apocalyptic Genre with a New Sci-Fi Adventure

Ridley Scott is back with another film, and it feels like we’ve been saying that for the last two decades. His upcoming project, The Dog Stars, is set to hit theaters on August 28, bringing a post-apocalyptic survival narrative to life. The latest trailer showcases barren landscapes and intense shootouts with raiders reminiscent of Mad Max.

One of the film’s standout features is its impressive cast, blending fresh talent with seasoned actors. Jacob Elordi takes on the role of Hig, a pilot on a quest to trace the source of a mysterious radio signal after a pandemic decimates humanity. Josh Brolin plays Bangley, an ex-Marine and Hig’s ally, while Margaret Qualley portrays the medic Cima. The ensemble also includes Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney.

The film draws inspiration from Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name, with Mark L. Smith adapting the screenplay. Cinematography is handled by Erik Messerschmidt, and the score is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.

While post-apocalyptic tales are always in vogue, the theme of deadly infectious diseases has gained a new resonance in light of recent global events. It will be interesting to see how Smith and Scott navigate the narrative, especially considering the source material was written before the rise of stories like The Last of Us and its HBO adaptation. The trailer’s visuals of overgrown cities and rugged survivors certainly evoke the journey of Joel and Ellie, which may influence the filmmakers’ approach.

Even in his eighties, Ridley Scott shows no signs of slowing down. With The Dog Stars, he will have directed five films in just five years, following The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, and Gladiator 2. After a series of historical dramas, he’s returning to his roots in speculative fiction for the first time since Alien: Covenant. The world may be on the brink, but Scott continues to deliver films at an impressive pace.
