Rising Console Prices Drive Down PlayStation and Xbox Sales

As the ongoing component crisis continues to inflate console prices, sales of gaming hardware are plummeting. Recent U.S. retail data reveals that Xbox hardware sales have dropped by 33% year-to-date as of August compared to the same time last year. PlayStation sales have also seen a decline, down 25% during the same period.

In August alone, PlayStation unit sales fell by 11% year over year, marking the lowest August total since 2013. Xbox sales experienced an even steeper decline, down 31%, hitting their lowest August figures since 2020. Nintendo wasn’t spared either, with a 15% drop from August of the previous year. This trend of declining console sales has been noted before, with similarly bleak data reported for July.

All three major console manufacturers have raised hardware prices over the past year and a half. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S have seen multiple price hikes, with the Xbox Series X now retailing for $799.99, which is $300 more than its launch price. The base PS5 increased from $499 to $549.99 in August 2025, followed by another $100 bump in April 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 also saw a $50 price increase this past September.

The shift in RAM production by manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, who are focusing more on AI data centers, has led to a significant shortage of memory chips for consumer electronics, including game consoles. This shortage has driven up the cost of hardware components, making console manufacturing more expensive, and those costs are being passed on to consumers.

Data indicates that the average price for a new Xbox console through August 2026 is $529, reflecting a 26% increase from the previous year. The average PlayStation sold for $597, up 20%. Both of these figures represent all-time highs in the U.S., nearly six years after these systems were launched. Typically, prices would decrease over time, making consoles more accessible to a broader audience.

While the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to provide a short-term boost to console sales, tech companies have indicated that hardware prices are unlikely to decrease anytime soon.

Video game console prices are rising while sales are significantly declining.
