Rivian Sees Sales Surge as R2 Strategy Begins to Yield Results

Rivian has set its sights high for the more budget-friendly R2 vehicle, and early results suggest those ambitions are starting to bear fruit. In its latest quarterly update, the company revealed it produced 19,751 vehicles and delivered 19,248, marking an impressive 85 percent increase in production and a 45 percent rise in deliveries compared to the previous year. For Rivian, which sells directly to consumers, these delivery figures are a strong indicator of sales performance. The company also reiterated its full-year guidance for 2026, projecting deliveries between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles.

This surge in sales stands out in a challenging automotive landscape. Following the removal of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit by the previous administration, overall electric vehicle sales have taken a significant hit, with a nearly 24 percent decline year-over-year as of September 2026, according to industry analysts. Even Tesla reported a slight 2.1 percent drop in Q3 sales, although that was better than anticipated.

Rivian has informed investors that it aims to sell over 25,000 R2s in its inaugural production year, potentially marking one of the quickest launches for a new electric vehicle in the U.S. The success of the R2 is crucial for Rivian’s future as an independent entity. As CEO RJ Scaringe emphasized earlier this year, “R2 is the most important thing we have because it’s what takes us from being subscale to being a scaled manufacturer.”

While Rivian doesn’t disclose sales figures by model, it anticipates that deliveries for its R1 series—the R1T truck and R1S SUV—as well as its electric delivery van will remain stable. Last year, the company delivered over 13,000 vehicles in the third quarter. If R1 and van deliveries stayed consistent, that would suggest around 6,000 R2 vehicles were delivered this quarter.

This positive sales report comes alongside other encouraging news for Rivian, including the announcement that the R2 achieved its climate goal of cutting lifetime emissions by 50 percent, reaching this milestone four years ahead of schedule.
