Roblox Game Inspired by Black Mirror Removed After Reaching Top Spot
Steal a Brainrotisso2025 has taken the Roblox scene by storm, but not all the attention is positive. The game, Steal an Egg, is drawing comparisons to some of the more unsettling narratives found in Netflix’s sci-fi anthology, Black Mirror, due to its dystopian elements.
As the title suggests, Steal an Egg revolves around players collecting and nurturing eggs. Once hatched, these eggs transform into pets that generate in-game currency over time, with rarer creatures yielding higher rewards. Players typically start with a basic chicken, but as they progress, they can raise more fantastical beings like dragons. Each player has a base, and similar to Steal a Brainrot, assets can be stolen by others in the server. Eggs can also be acquired by pilfering them from various biomes, each guarded by a challenge that increases with the egg’s rarity.
Success in this game hinges on speed. Players can buy speed boosts with real money or enhance their speed by running on a treadmill. These treadmills feature a Reels function, allowing players to watch videos while they grind. This mechanic has sparked a viral reaction on social media, with many users expressing shock at its implications. A YouTube video by a user named Foltyn has garnered over 1.3 million views, showcasing this treadmill feature.
The treadmill has drawn parallels to the Black Mirror episode “Fifteen Million Merits,” where individuals must pedal stationary bikes to cover basic living expenses. While Steal an Egg’s treadmill isn’t as grim as the episode—where players face penalties for ignoring ads—there’s still a sense of discomfort in its design. Players are engaging with the game voluntarily, rather than being coerced into it for survival.
However, the game was abruptly removed from the platform on Monday afternoon, shortly after it hit the top spot and attracted a wave of negative attention online. Before its removal, Steal an Egg boasted over 500,000 concurrent players, making it one of the most prominent titles on Roblox, though it didn’t quite match the peak numbers of Steal a Brainrot or Grow a Garden.
Roblox has yet to clarify the reason for the game’s takedown, but it may have breached terms of service regarding content sharing on platforms like TikTok. Roblox restricts users to sharing links from an approved list, which excludes TikTok and Instagram Reels, and prohibits games from linking to unapproved sites. The developers of Steal an Egg have not provided a specific reason for the removal on Discord, but they assured players that the game would return shortly, promising “everyone getting extra stuff as a sorry.”
While the treadmill feature has stirred controversy, it also taps into a familiar gamer habit: multitasking while engaging in repetitive gameplay. Many players have likely watched videos or listened to podcasts while grinding in games. However, Steal an Egg’s design encourages microtransactions, setting it apart from the traditional grind of leveling up in an RPG. Additionally, Roblox may struggle to regulate what players view in-game, which could lead to unforeseen issues.
