Roblox’s New Facial Expression Policy Draws Player Discontent

On Tuesday, Roblox unveiled a significant update to its marketplace policy regarding in-game character heads, sparking outrage among players. Currently, Roblox avatars feature two types of heads: Classic Heads, which are static and display a single facial expression, and Dynamic Heads, which are animated and can convey various emotions. Many long-time players have a strong preference for Classic Heads, but the latest announcement reveals plans to transition all Classic Heads to Dynamic Heads.

A Roblox representative stated, “We are building a platform where every user can express themselves authentically. We just announced an update to our Heads policy in pursuit of this mission. Classic Heads and Faces are static and do not support the defined cage regions or animation requirements of this policy, nor do they allow for users to express themselves. While we want to empower creators to keep the same look and feel if they’d like, animation is vital in user self-expression. Therefore, we are completing the conversion of all Classic Heads and Faces to Dynamic Heads and we expect this work to complete in February 2026.”

The updated Heads policy, which took effect immediately, mandates that all new head submissions must include a caged model that surrounds the head to “support accessory layering,” defined eye and mouth regions that “respond to blink and mouth open/close animations,” and the capability to express at least 17 specific facial expressions.

The timeline outlined in Roblox’s announcement has raised further concerns among players. Alongside the new submission requirements, a March 3 deadline has been set for the transition. Any heads that do not comply by this date will be removed from the marketplace. Furthermore, on June 15, any heads that remain non-compliant will be deleted from user inventories permanently.

“After this point, Roblox will attempt a best effort to update all remaining Heads to be compliant while respecting artistic intent,” the company stated regarding the June deadline. “Creators will have the opportunity to reject these changes if they do not approve. If heads are not updated by creators or by Roblox, we will remove the Head from user inventories.”

Roblox is primarily a platform driven by user-generated content, and this new policy means that creators who fail to update their Classic Head models will see their work removed from the marketplace and eventually from player inventories. However, updating these designs could be a daunting task, especially for creators who have produced hundreds of Classic Heads over the years.

“I don’t even know how the format for updating the faces is going to be,” one creator expressed on X. “I’m honestly super worried…”

“I’m in the same boat, and having made over 200 faces, I don’t know what to expect,” another creator replied.

The backlash from the player community has been fierce. Classic Heads are particularly favored by veteran players, many of whom are lamenting the decision to eliminate static faces from the marketplace. Some are concerned that the classic body models might be next on the chopping block.

“Will R6 be the last thing we have left of the Roblox we know?” one player questioned on Reddit, referring to the R6 avatar rig, which consists of a simple, blocky body made up of six rigid parts.

“I hate to say it, but it’s a question of when, not if, R6 gets removed,” another player commented in the same thread, voicing fears that Roblox may soon enforce the more complex R15 rig as the default avatar. The R15 is already required for many games on the platform.

While Roblox claims that the shift to Dynamic Heads is about enhancing self-expression, players argue it’s more about convenience and control. A Reddit user, TypicalRobloxEnjoyer, whose flair reads “I’m obsessed with old Roblox culture,” shared a screenshot of a community poll where 98% of respondents preferred 2D faces over Dynamic Heads.

“I bet the 2% that voted for dynamic faces are Roblox’s PR team,” they quipped.

Aside from the announcements regarding the upcoming deadlines and guidance for creators on converting Classic Heads, Roblox has not addressed the issue further or responded to players urging the company to reconsider its decision.

This controversy over Dynamic Heads follows a series of contentious changes for Roblox, including a new requirement for players to provide facial photo verification or ID before accessing in-game chat. This policy was introduced amid concerns about the safety of child players, an area where Roblox has faced significant criticism over the years. Many have pointed to the previous lax ID verification system as a factor in various dangers, including child disappearances linked to predators in-game. However, similar to the Classic Heads versus Dynamic Heads situation, many players view the new safety policy as a convenient means to collect user data under the pretense of ensuring safety.

“We went from Cheez-It Logo to STRAIGHT UP DISABLING CHAT FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANNA GIVE THEIR FACE,” one frustrated player vented on Reddit. “OH AND ON TOP OF THAT WE ARE REMOVING CLASSIC FACES. WHAT IS UP WITH ROBLOX AND FACES???”
