Rockstar assures fans that its upcoming game will arrive much sooner than eight years.

The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been palpable, especially considering the more than 13-year wait since Grand Theft Auto 5. While Rockstar had to wrap up the expansive Red Dead Redemption 2 before shifting focus to the next chapter in its crime saga, it’s still been eight years since Rockstar North launched that title. For perspective, the studio previously rolled out Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto 4 with a smaller team over just seven years.

Rockstar’s leadership is clearly aware of the lengthy development timeline. In a recent feature on Grand Theft Auto 6, executives at Rockstar have promised that the next installment won’t take as long to release.

“The engine, the tools, and the team we’ve assembled for this project will enable us to work more efficiently,” stated Phil Hooker, co-head of development for Grand Theft Auto 6. “I’m confident we can build on this foundation and create more engaging content.”

“We’ve fundamentally changed a lot of aspects during this project,” added Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North. “But now that it’s complete, we’re not going to dismantle it.”

Additional insights from the feature highlight the immense scale of the game’s development. When Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted in 2018, Rockstar had 2,441 employees. By 2026, that number had surged to 4,711 across 12 offices, with 4,020 dedicated to development and quality assurance. This scale suggests that the game is likely one of the most expensive ever created, although the studio has refuted claims that GTA 6’s budget exceeded $1.5 billion.

The article also sheds light on the reasons behind GTA 6’s extended development cycle. Garbut noted that crafting a single nightclub required animating and scripting each individual patron, along with layering drinks, music, and lighting to create a realistic atmosphere. “And now you understand why it took so long,” remarked Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar’s head of publishing.

GTA 6 has come to symbolize the challenges facing modern game development, where rising technical demands and expansive worlds have resulted in ballooning budgets and prolonged production times. Despite Rockstar’s recent commitment to expedite the release of its next title, the studio had previously expressed similar optimism about GTA 6 following Red Dead Redemption 2’s five-year development period. Let’s hope we’re not waiting until the mid-2030s for the next project.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with a PC version reportedly scheduled for 2027. The game’s map is anticipated to be three times larger than that of Red Dead Redemption 2.
