Roland Launches Melody Flip for Generative AI Music Creation

Roland’s new Melody Flip tool is an exciting step into the world of generative AI music, though it doesn’t quite deliver the instant gratification of “push button; get song” like some other tools. This plug-in for your digital audio workstation (DAW) features around 250 “Palettes,” which are curated collections of musical ideas organized by genre. You can either start fresh and request a mix of melodies, chord progressions, basslines, or drum patterns, or you can input a reference track to inspire new melodic ideas.

Unlike some other generative tools, Melody Flip doesn’t produce fully polished tracks with vocals and complete arrangements. Instead, it generates simple musical loops designed to ignite your creativity. The control over the outputs is somewhat limited; you can’t input a detailed text prompt like “acoustic country rock with clean male vocals, literate singer-songwriter, gentle brushed drums, and sparse pedal steel at 98BPM” to get a specific sound. Instead, you select a genre, note density, BPM, and musical key, and then work with what it provides. The genre options range from classic styles like “80s disco” and “90s R&B” to more niche categories such as “Kawaii Future Bass” and “Anime World.”

The sound selection reinforces that Melody Flip’s outputs are not meant to be used as-is. The available presets resemble the general MIDI tones reminiscent of ‘90s video games. The tool seems designed for exporting MIDI data directly into your DAW, where you can manipulate it and combine it with more advanced synth plugins.

After a period of uncertainty and customer dissatisfaction with its Roland Cloud subscription service, the company has recently regained its footing. The P-6 Creative Sampler, SH-4d, and Gaia 2 synth have all addressed significant concerns within the lineup. Roland also paid homage to its analog roots with the TR-1000 last year. However, given the mixed reactions from the music community towards generative AI, Melody Flip may not receive the warm welcome it hopes for.
