RuneScape Makes Its Console Debut
RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival-crafting offshoot of the iconic MMORPG, is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium later this year, marking the franchise’s debut on consoles. This exciting announcement was made during a recent State of Play event.
Initially released in April 2026 on Steam in Early Access, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has garnered positive feedback, boasting an 81% user approval rating and surpassing 1 million copies sold. The game takes place in the Ashenfall region from the main series, allowing up to four players to team up in a quest to defeat the Dragon Queen. What sets it apart from other survival games is the inclusion of magic; players can conjure a spectral axe to fell trees or use water spells to gather fish. Additionally, players can develop skills reminiscent of the original game while facing off against familiar foes like Zogres and Black Knights.
For those unfamiliar with RuneScape, it’s a free-to-play MMO that debuted on PC in 2001 and has managed to stay relevant over the years, with over 300 million accounts created since launch. Originally accessible via web browsers, the game has evolved through various iterations, culminating in a modernized version often referred to as RuneScape 3, which is available on Steam.
There’s also a downloadable version of the classic game, known as Old School RuneScape, which features retro graphics and a traditional combat system. As of now, Old School RuneScape boasts over 112,000 active players, placing it among the top 10 most-played games on Steam.
While the original game is currently exclusive to PC, the arrival of RuneScape: Dragonwilds on PS5 hints at the possibility of a console version of the original MMO in the future. A recent press release highlighted this development as a significant step in Jagex’s strategy to broaden the franchise’s reach across new platforms. Although the original game’s architecture and mouse-based controls may pose challenges for a console port, the success of this spin-off could pave the way for such an endeavor.
