Rust’s October Update Introduces Quirky New Features: Raw Milk and Rotten Meat Fuel
Rust’s long-awaited livestock update has finally dropped, and it’s time for players to roll up their sleeves and dive into farming. With sheep and cows taking center stage, grab your shears and milk bucket because these critters are about to become essential to your survival. Beyond just dung, they provide milk and wool, both of which will be invaluable each wipe.
There’s plenty to explore with sheep and cows in Rust. Like any wild animal, you can butcher them for meat, bones, leather, and animal fat. But with the introduction of new fence and gate blueprints, you can now create a farm and breed these animals for dung, milk, or wool—each serving its own purpose.
Dung has been a resource in Rust for a while; it’s used to create fertilizer that boosts plant growth and can also be traded for scrap. Milk can be consumed directly or transformed into cream or skimmed milk, enhancing the duration and potency of your pie and tea recipes.
Wool can be sold to vendors at Stables, just like the animals themselves. When trading wool or livestock, vendors will make a random offer, and you can reject it up to three times. After that, you’ll have to wait 15 minutes before you can trade again.
Breeding is a significant feature of this update, as each animal has its own genetic traits, much like plants. The genes of the offspring will be influenced by their parents. To successfully breed animals, players need to ensure they are well cared for. Animals with superior genes will fetch a higher price at vendors and produce goods more efficiently. Eventually, you might find yourself butchering some less desirable breeds. Fortunately, the new biofuel generator allows you to convert their meat—whether spoiled or fresh—into low-grade fuel. The better the calorific value of the bio-matter you feed into the generator, the more low-grade fuel you’ll produce. Essentially, Rust now lets you turn your fallen animals into fuel—a unique twist not often seen in farming sims.
This update also introduces decorative wildlife. Depending on the biome, players can encounter frogs, turtles, jellyfish, crabs, and squirrels. Alongside these gameplay enhancements and environmental upgrades, there’s a new cosmetic DLC: the Plague Doctor skin for the Hazmat Suit. This eerie outfit is perfect for embracing the spooky vibes of October. You can snag the new Plague Doctor DLC on Steam for $9.99.
You can run, but you can’t hide forever.
