Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Casting Brings Surprising Twist to the Classic Series
Deadline has revealed that Ryan Coogler’s upcoming reboot of The X-Files is set to feature at least three notable guest stars: Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, and Amy Madigan, who recently snagged an Oscar for her role in Weapons. While their specific roles remain under wraps, their casting suggests a shift from the original series’ approach.
In the original X-Files run, big-name guest stars were a rarity. The show typically leaned on lesser-known actors, likely due to budget constraints, as it produced over 20 episodes each season. This choice allowed characters like Eugene Victor Tooms (Doug Hutchison) and Pusher (Robert Wisden) to feel like genuine oddities, as their performances weren’t overshadowed by star power. It also kept David Duchovny’s Agent Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Agent Scully in the spotlight, without the distraction of competing guest stars.
However, revisiting the series today, it can be amusing to spot familiar faces in minor roles. Actors like Jack Black, Seth Green, and Ryan Reynolds all made early appearances on The X-Files. Notably, Vince Gilligan’s desire to cast Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad stemmed from their collaboration on the show.
Occasionally, the original series did feature prominent guest stars, typically for special episodes. A memorable example is the lighthearted Christmas episode in season 6, where Lily Tomlin and Ed Asner portray ghosts. Michael McKean’s role as Morris Fletcher, a man in black, was also significant, appearing in the two-part episode “Dreamland.”
While Deadline’s announcement mentions a few other guest stars who may not be as well-known, Buscemi, Foster, and Madigan stand out. For the reboot to truly resonate, the emphasis should remain on its leads, Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler, rather than the allure of any high-profile guest star.
