Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are back with a new film – a Cold War spy thriller with a twist, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

Reynolds stars as U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, while Branagh plays ex-KGB agent Nicolai Ustinov.

In the first look, which you can check out above, Reynolds and Branagh are seen lying side by side in the snow, both looking worn out, as if they’ve just been in a fight or have collapsed. This isn’t surprising, given that they’re on opposing sides of the conflict… but there may be more to their story than it seems.

“Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh team up in Mayday, a genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that turns the spy thriller on its head,” the official synopsis states. “When hotshot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy ‘Assassin’ Kelly (Reynolds) is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory during the height of the Cold War, the operation goes awry, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines.

“Found by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a tough ex-KGB agent with a love for American culture, Troy thinks he’s done for – but could an unexpected partnership between the two lead to Troy’s rescue and a friendship neither anticipated?”

It sounds like this won’t be your typical Cold War thriller, which is exactly what we’d expect from a duo like Daley and Goldstein. Count us in for the fun…

The cast also features Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, and David Morse. Daley and Goldstein are not only directing but also writing and producing.
