Ryan Reynolds’ new action comedy takes streaming by storm.
Ryan Reynolds has had quite the dynamic few years. He made his return as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine, teaming up once again with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Prior to that, he starred in the time-travel sci-fi adventure The Adam Project and the holiday musical comedy Spirited alongside Will Ferrell, not to mention his countless Mint Mobile commercials.
While it might seem like Reynolds has taken on the role of a full-time phone spokesperson, he’s still very much active in film. This week, one of his latest projects is climbing the streaming charts, showcasing that audiences are eager to see him back in action.
Mayday, a fresh action-comedy from the directors of Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, debuted on Apple TV last week and quickly captured viewers’ attention. It has become the top movie on Apple TV in 100 countries, according to FlixPatrol.
In Mayday, Reynolds steps into the role of Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a skilled U.S. Navy pilot on a covert mission in Soviet territory during the Cold War. Things take a turn for the worse when Troy is forced to crash-land behind enemy lines. Stranded in the Russian wilderness with enemy forces closing in, his best shot at survival comes from an unexpected ally: Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent portrayed by Kenneth Branagh.
The duo must join forces to navigate their escape from Soviet territory, transforming what starts as a perilous Cold War mission into an unlikely buddy adventure.
Joining Reynolds and Branagh are Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, and David Morse.
Initial reviews have been generally positive, though critics have had mixed feelings about Reynolds’ latest performance. Mayday currently holds a score in the low 80s on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviews highlighting the chemistry between Reynolds and Branagh, as well as the film’s lively action-comedy vibe.
Some critics have expressed concerns about the script and Reynolds’ familiar wisecracking style, but there’s a consensus that Branagh is thoroughly enjoying his role.
Mayday is now available for streaming on Apple TV.
