Sales Projections Show 39 Million Drop in Console Sales if PS6 and Xbox Helix Are Priced at $1,000

Affordable consoles lead to a larger player base, a fact highlighted by the Wii’s success during the competitive era of the Xbox 360 and PS3. If Sony and Microsoft can’t manage costs for the PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s Project Helix, we might see a similar trend in reverse. A recent analysis suggests that if these next-gen consoles are priced at $1,000, their install base could shrink by 38 percent.

According to Ampere Analysis, the landscape of console gaming has shifted dramatically. The senior research director noted that if Sony and Microsoft release traditionally designed consoles at significantly higher prices, they risk limiting their audience for the upcoming generation.

The prediction indicates that around 39 million fewer PS6 and Project Helix units could be sold in the first five years if the price tag hits $1,000 instead of $700. Additionally, player spending could drop by about 12 percent in the first three years of the new console generation, translating to a loss of approximately $3.4 billion, much of which would be absorbed by rising component costs rather than benefiting game developers.

To prevent a potential downturn in the console market, the report suggests three strategies. The first is to postpone the launches of the PS6 and Project Helix beyond the anticipated 2028 timeframe until component prices stabilize. The second option involves more aggressive subsidies, where Sony and Microsoft would absorb the higher costs to maintain a growing player base. The third approach calls for significant innovation, moving beyond just enhanced power for better graphics.

However, it seems unlikely that either company will adopt these strategies. Relying on a drop in prices after 2028 is a risky bet, and it’s uncertain whether hardware that has been in development for years can be reimagined to offer a more affordable option focused on innovative features rather than just increased processing power. On a positive note, both console makers will face competition from the upcoming $500 Switch 2.

Nintendo has long prioritized innovation over sheer power, resulting in a console that remains the most budget-friendly option available, without sacrificing too much on game quality.
