Sam Altman Testifies in Legal Battle with Elon Musk
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has taken the stand in a high-stakes jury trial against Elon Musk in a California federal courtroom. Altman, along with OpenAI president Greg Brockman, is a key defendant in this case initiated by Musk. The trio were part of the original founding team at OpenAI, with Musk contributing as much as $38 million during its formative phase. However, tensions grew between Musk and the other founders, leading him to exit the company and establish his own rival venture, xAI. In recent years, the relationship has been marked by public disputes and a series of allegations, largely stemming from Musk’s various legal actions against OpenAI, many of which have been withdrawn or dismissed.
The trial has already featured testimony from notable figures in the AI sector, including Brockman; Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella; Shivon Zilis, a former OpenAI board member and Musk’s partner; and Mira Murati, the former OpenAI CTO and brief CEO, who has since launched her own AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab. Musk is seeking several remedies, including the removal of Altman and Brockman from their positions and the reversal of OpenAI’s for-profit restructuring.
