Sam Raimi Shares His Thoughts on a Possible Return to the Spider-Man Franchise
It’s been five years since Tobey Maguire donned his iconic red and blue suit in Spider-Man: No Way Home, a moment that reignited the nostalgia for many fans who consider him the original Spider-Man (shoutout to Nicholas Hammond). Since then, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether he might return for a fourth installment under the direction of Sam Raimi, who originally brought the character to life on the big screen. Unfortunately, Raimi has now confirmed that this is not in the cards.
In a recent chat, the director of the trilogy that kicked off in 2002 shared that his time crafting another tale for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has come to an end. He reflected on the current landscape of the superhero genre, particularly with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man making waves since Captain America: Civil War, and Raimi’s own contributions to the multiverse with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He stated that it wouldn’t feel right for him to revisit his version of the story.
While this news may be disappointing for fans of Raimi’s era, he emphasized that the legacy of Spider-Man is vast and ever-evolving. “Stan Lee’s great character — created by a team of writers at Marvel — has seen many interpretations. I was fortunate to carry the torch for a time after 40 years of Spider-Man comics,” he explained. “After my trilogy, I passed the torch to others, and they need to continue the journey with the audience that’s now following the new torchbearer.”
Though Raimi has made it clear he’s not looking to return to the Spider-Man universe, some familiar faces from his era are still interested. Kirsten Dunst recently expressed her willingness to reprise her role as Mary Jane alongside Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. And while there are whispers of Spidey making another appearance, it seems that Raimi won’t be the one to tell that story.
