Sega Considered Scrapping Sonic the Hedgehog, But the Films Turned It Around

2026 marks the 35th anniversary of the Sonic franchise, celebrating a remarkable journey for one of gaming’s most recognizable characters. The series has experienced its share of highs and lows, with moments that nearly led to its cancellation. During the Tokyo Game Show, Sonic’s creative officer, Takashi Iizuka, shared insights into the challenges of keeping the franchise alive and how the 2020 film adaptation played a pivotal role in its resurgence.

In a discussion with the press, Iizuka revealed that there were times when he was advised by higher-ups to consider canceling the franchise entirely. He fought hard within the organization to ensure its survival. While he didn’t specify when Sega contemplated cancellation or how long that period lasted, it’s clear that the series has only recently regained its momentum.

Iizuka highlighted that the release of the first movie in 2020 was a significant turning point for the franchise. Despite initial criticism of Sonic’s design, the film ultimately achieved tremendous box-office success. This success demonstrated to Sega that interest in the series remained strong and helped introduce a new generation of fans to Sonic. “It changed the course of this franchise,” Iizuka stated.

He also mentioned that Shadow the Hedgehog, much like the franchise itself, was nearly written off. This darker counterpart to Sonic, known for wielding a gun, has become a fan favorite since his debut in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, where he seemingly meets his end. Iizuka explained that Shadow was so popular that they decided to bring him back in Sonic Heroes.

Shadow’s popularity continues to grow, especially following his appearance in the third live-action movie. Iizuka, who considers Shadow his favorite character, expressed a desire to explore more opportunities for him. “I want to have more places where Shadow can appeal,” he said, adding that he aims to focus on him more in future projects. Fans can look forward to seeing more of Sonic and Shadow, including their current showdown against Godzilla.
