Sekiro Anime Set to Premiere as an 8-Episode Series with Streaming Release Date Announced

The anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is set to hit streaming platforms soon. It has been announced that Sekiro: No Defeat will start streaming in January 2027, but fans can expect it in a different format: as an eight-episode series rather than a standalone film.

This news comes as the anime concludes its theatrical run in Japan, where it enjoyed an extended showing. The version that graced theaters was a 107-minute film, but the streaming release will feature an expanded adaptation.

Producer Tetsushi Suzuki shared details about this change on the anime’s official website, expressing regret for not initially revealing that the adaptation would be episodic.

“This project began as an eight-episode TV series. However, as we progressed, we wanted audiences to experience the film’s stunning visuals and sound on the big screen first, so we released a condensed version as a preview,” Suzuki stated in translated comments. “We apologize for not clarifying that the film currently showing is an edited version and for not informing you about the TV series. The series will include scenes and cuts not found in the film, released weekly, providing a different experience while still rooted in the film’s narrative. Whether you’ve seen the film or are diving into the series for the first time, we hope you look forward to it.”

Kenichi Kutsuna directed Sekiro: No Defeat for the anime studio Qzil.la, with Shunsuke Fukui as assistant director, Takahiro Kishida handling character design, and Shuta Hasunuma composing the score.

The official description for Sekiro: No Defeat reveals a fractured Japan, divided into warring nations, with Ashina at its heart—a land steeped in ancient mystery. Two decades after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina’s brutal coup, a new threat arises from within: The Interior Ministry. To safeguard his homeland, Isshin’s grandson Genichiro resorts to forbidden powers. The only hope lies with a kidnapped boy—the Divine Heir—and his silent guardian, a devoted shinobi known as Sekiro.

This is the tale of a lord and his retainer, united in their quest to restore balance to a nation on the brink.

Sekiro: No Defeat will begin streaming in January 2027, with new episodes released weekly. Alongside the announcement, producers unveiled a new poster for the adaptation.
