Sekiro: No Defeat Anime Set to Stream on Crunchyroll, Not as a Movie

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has made the leap to anime, with its recent debut in Japanese theaters. For those outside Japan, the series will hit Crunchyroll in January 2027, but it won’t be the same as the theatrical version. The producer has even issued an apology for any confusion regarding the different adaptations.

The limited early release of the Sekiro: No Defeat anime has wrapped up, and what will be available globally is not the same as the movie. The two-hour film that premiered in Japan will be reworked and expanded into an eight-episode series on Crunchyroll. Each episode will run for about 24 minutes, adding roughly an hour of new content to the story.

Producer Tetsushi Suzuki expressed regret over the mix-up concerning the various versions of the Sekiro anime and for the delay in providing updates about the TV series.

This new format could also address some of the issues present in the film adaptation. After watching the movie in Japanese theaters, I found it to be somewhat rushed and disjointed, lacking essential context and failing to engage both newcomers and long-time fans.

The extra time afforded by a TV series could significantly enhance the storytelling by filling in gaps that the film left open, which relied heavily on viewers’ prior knowledge of the narrative. It’s been confirmed that the TV version will feature new cuts and sequences, along with improved animation, making it the definitive adaptation of the anime.
