Sen. Markey Raises Concerns Over ‘Deceptive Advertising’ in ChatGPT
Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) is challenging OpenAI regarding its decision to introduce advertisements in ChatGPT and is inquiring with several other tech companies about their intentions in this area. In correspondence with the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, and xAI, Markey expresses that incorporating ads into AI chatbots raises serious concerns about consumer protection, privacy, and the safety of younger users.
OpenAI plans to begin testing ads for free ChatGPT users soon, with these ads appearing as “sponsored” products and services at the end of chatbot conversations. The company claims that the ads will be relevant to the ongoing chat but assures that they will not be displayed to users under 18 or during discussions about physical health, mental health, or political topics.
Despite these precautions, Markey warns that the introduction of ads in ChatGPT and similar AI platforms signifies a major and potentially hazardous shift in the advertising landscape. He notes that a user’s emotional bond with the chatbot could enable companies to exploit the very connections that these systems cultivate. Markey also highlights OpenAI’s assertion that “conversational interfaces create possibilities for people to go beyond static messages and links,” which could complicate users’ ability to distinguish between ads and genuine content in the future.
Markey raises additional concerns about privacy, emphasizing that AI companies should not utilize an individual’s “personal thoughts, health questions, family issues, and other sensitive information” for targeted advertising. While OpenAI states it will refrain from showing ads during sensitive discussions, Markey questions whether the company will still leverage this information to tailor ads in future interactions.
“AI companies have a responsibility to ensure that AI chatbots do not become another digital ecosystem structured to covertly manipulate users,” Markey asserts. He has set a deadline of February 12th for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, and xAI to respond to inquiries regarding ads in AI chatbots and their measures to safeguard users.
