Seth Rogen Claims Obsession Director’s Upcoming Film Surpasses Previous Work

Curry Barker has quickly established himself as a rising star in the film world, particularly among horror enthusiasts, thanks to the impressive reception of his latest film, Obsession. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long for his next project. While Obsession was still making waves in theaters, Barker was already hard at work on a new horror-comedy titled Anything but Ghosts, which is set to be distributed by Focus Features. It appears that this upcoming film has at least one notable supporter.

Seth Rogen has shared that Barker’s next venture surpasses his previous work. In his commentary for Barker’s inclusion in a list of influential rising talents, Rogen stated, “I’ve seen Curry’s next film, Anything but Ghosts—and for those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news … it’s even better, and, to add insult to injury, he’s just as good an actor as he is a director.”

While some may dismiss Rogen as merely “that guy with the laugh who’s always playing a stoner,” he has proven his mettle as a filmmaker over the years. This is evident in Apple TV’s brilliantly crafted cringe-comedy series, The Studio, which he co-directed with Evan Goldberg. Rogen has also co-directed films like This Is the End and The Interview with Goldberg. Fans will have to wait until Anything but Ghosts premieres on May 7, 2027, to see how it performs, but Rogen’s endorsement is certainly a promising sign.

Anything but Ghosts is a comedy-horror film that follows two fake paranormal investigators who find themselves in over their heads when their sham business encounters genuine supernatural events. Barker stars alongside Cooper Tomlinson, who also co-wrote the film and previously appeared in Obsession. Tomlinson has humorously described the movie as “if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary” during a podcast discussion.

Barker and Tomlinson have a long-standing collaborative relationship, having launched a sketch comedy YouTube channel called “that’s a bad idea” in 2016, followed by their first feature-length film, Milk & Serial, in 2024. With the success of Obsession, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms, and numerous other horror films, it’s clear that the landscape is shifting, allowing filmmakers to use platforms like YouTube as a viable springboard into Hollywood. Given the quality of many recent releases, it’s hard to argue against this trend.
