Renowned for his 1999 shark horror film Deep Blue Sea, Renny Harlin is diving back into the genre with Deep Water, and the first trailer looks like a thrilling mix of Jaws and Snakes on a Plane.

The teaser trailer opens with pilots (Aaron Eckhart from The Dark Knight and Ben Kingsley from Wonder Man) preparing to fly a plane full of passengers to Shanghai. However, turbulence sends the aircraft spiraling before it crash-lands in the ocean. While many passengers face peril, the real threat lurks beneath the waves as a ravenous shark targets the survivors.

Though the teaser doesn’t reveal much about the sharks, it’s filled with gripping visuals, including passengers being yanked from the plane in a Final Destination-style sequence and the aircraft plummeting into the sea. At one point, a shot of a gaping hole in the plane resembles a shark’s open mouth.

The official synopsis states, “A group of international passengers traveling from Los Angeles to Shanghai must make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. They must band together to survive the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage.” Alongside Eckhart and Kingsley, the film features Molly Wright, Angus Sampson, Kelly Gale, and Li Wenhan.

Deep Water marks Harlin’s return to shark horror after 27 years. The director recently helmed the Strangers reboot trilogy featuring Riverdale’s Madelaine Petsch. It seems Harlin is back in the deep-sea horror game, as he’s also working on a killer whale-themed film titled Black Tides, starring Melissa Barrera from Scream 5 and 6 and John Travolta.

Deep Water is set to hit theaters on May 1.
