In a recent discussion, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shared that he believes George R.R. Martin would have preferred Dunk and Egg’s story to be adapted into a movie rather than a TV series.

“I would say it was probably George [R.R. Martin’s] preference to do a two-hour movie,” Ira Parker mentioned during a roundtable interview. “But since HBO approached me with this, they were very open to any length or format we wanted to explore.”

The series ultimately consists of six episodes, each running between 30 and 40 minutes. Personally, I think the story’s nature fits well with an episodic format – and at this point, Game of Thrones feels like it belongs on the small screen.

The latest episode, which is the second-to-last of the season, adhered to Game of Thrones tradition by being the most intense and action-packed yet. Episode 5, titled ‘In the Name of the Mother,’ featured hedge knight Dunk facing off against Prince Aerion Targaryen in a brutal Trial by Seven, resulting in a tragic outcome for a beloved character.

‘In the Name of the Mother’ has quickly become one of the highest-rated episodes in the Game of Thrones franchise on IMDb, surpassed only by iconic episodes like The Rains of Castermere and Battle of the Bastards.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs weekly on HBO and HBO Max in the US, as well as Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Keep track of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms release schedule, or catch up with our review of the series.
