Sicario 3 is in the works with a fresh creative team on board.
The third installment of the Sicario series is officially in the works, with original cast members Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin set to return. However, there will be some notable changes behind the scenes, as a new director and writer are stepping in for Sicario 3. This means that, contrary to earlier reports, series creator Taylor Sheridan will not be directly involved in this sequel.
The follow-up to 2018’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado will be penned by Steven Knight, known for creating Peaky Blinders and writing films like Eastern Promises and Spencer.
Recently, it was reported that Sheridan had completed a script for the third film, but production companies Black Label Media and Thunder Road have decided to take a different route, bringing Knight on board to craft the story.
Padraic McKinley is set to direct Sicario 3. His previous work includes the TV series Fightworld and Kingdom, as well as the recent film The Weight, featuring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe.
The original Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, delves into the morally complex war on drugs along the U.S.-Mexico border. Released in 2015, it stars Emily Blunt as the principled FBI agent Kate Macer, who is recruited by the U.S. government to help capture a Mexican drug cartel leader, working alongside CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and former Mexican prosecutor turned assassin Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro). Graver and Gillick operate in the shadows, withholding vital information from Macer, which creates a constant atmosphere of tension and impending violence throughout their covert operations.
Sheridan also wrote the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima, where Brolin and del Toro reprised their roles, but Blunt did not return. The sequel received a lukewarm response both commercially and critically, with many missing Villeneuve’s direction and Roger Deakins’ acclaimed cinematography.
The third Sicario film, often referred to as Sicario: Capos, has been in development since 2018. While no release date has been announced, reports indicate that producers are aiming to begin filming in early 2027.
A decade later, few thrillers manage to balance heart-pounding suspense and moral complexity as effectively as this series.
