Sims Team Affirms Commitment to Core Values Amid Possible Saudi EA Partnership

Electronic Arts’ $55 billion agreement to sell itself to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, and the private equity firm Silver Lake is still pending regulatory approval. This has raised concerns among some Sims fans and creators about how potential Saudi control might impact the franchise’s inclusive nature. To address these worries, the developers of The Sims want players to know that their core values remain intact. “The values of The Sims are unchanged,” states the message on the franchise’s official page. “Our Sims team’s creative control, guided by our values of inclusivity, choice, creativity, community, and play, has not changed. These values inspire the decisions we make each and every day as we plan for today, tomorrow, and the future.” Given Saudi Arabia’s track record on human rights, the apprehension from The Sims community is understandable. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren have expressed their concerns regarding “foreign influence” on EA if the deal is approved. In response, EA has assured that it will maintain creative control of the company post-sale. The Sims team also reiterated its dedication “to single-player life simulation experiences” while hinting at new Sims content for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms, with playtesting expected to start this year. They mentioned that “Project Rene has evolved into a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim game,” clarifying that it is not meant to replace The Sims 4. Instead, it aims to offer “a new way to explore and play together within the growing Sims family of games, welcoming Simmers who want to connect directly with other players.” Last year, EA indicated that it has released so much DLC for The Sims 4 that moving on to The Sims 5 isn’t currently on the table. Additionally, a Sims movie is in the works, produced by Margot Robbie’s Lucky Chap production studio.
