Slay the Spire 2 hints at exciting new features on the horizon

Despite some player dissatisfaction in March, the future of Slay the Spire 2 is looking brighter than ever, according to the developers behind this beloved deckbuilder. While new characters are a given, what’s really intriguing are the three distinct modes that Mega Crit is planning for early access.

In a detailed chat, co-founder Casey Yano shared insights about Slay the Spire 2. He addressed recent events, including how some newer team members were surprised by the fan response to a card adjustment. There were also interesting nuggets, like the fact that Ironclad and the Regent have similar win rates. Yano expressed his fondness for the divisive Snakebite card, suggesting that its potential is yet to be fully realized by players.

The most tantalizing parts of the conversation, however, were also the most ambiguous.

“There are three specific things I have in mind,” Yano mentioned when discussing potential new modes.

He elaborated, “The first mode is designed for those who want a highly competitive experience. The second caters to players who enjoy Slay the Spire but may not have the time to dive deep. The third explores the idea of social or multiplayer interactions within the existing systems.”

Yano did emphasize that while Mega Crit has outlined some design concepts for these modes, they are still in the experimental phase. “We don’t want to just throw a bunch of ideas out there and say, here’s 25 game modes!”

Regarding new characters, Yano remained somewhat elusive but explained the studio’s approach. He highlighted that they don’t start with broad character concepts and then fit mechanics around them. Instead, they focus on a mechanics-first design philosophy, which helps them envision a suitable card pool for each archetype. While it seems the team is actively developing new characters, Yano was cautious about revealing specifics. He noted that in the past, some character ideas have been explored for a long time before being scrapped. However, players can expect characters with greater complexity.

“I think we’re going to be looking at a slightly stranger character than the original,” Yano stated.
