As Bungie’s new FPS, Marathon, approaches its release, excitement is building. With just a month to go, the game was discussed during a recent earnings call, where confidence in its development was expressed.

Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, shared insights from playtests that highlighted both strengths and areas for improvement, leading to adjustments that have boosted team morale. “After the modifications, we are very confident to release it on March 5,” she noted.

Marathon has had a rocky path; initially slated for a 2024 release, it was pushed to 2025 and then delayed indefinitely, raising questions about its development progress.

However, in January, a firm release date was set for early March, accompanied by trailers and behind-the-scenes footage showcasing the engaging gameplay fans expect from Bungie. During this time, there was also a shift in leadership, with Julia Nardin stepping in as creative director.

Tao’s remarks indicate that everything is coming together nicely. This installment continues the legacy of the original Marathon trilogy from the ’90s, focusing on multiplayer gameplay where players take on the role of cybernetically enhanced scavengers hunting for resources on a space colony after a catastrophic event. The game boasts a vibrant, futuristic aesthetic, and the narrative evolves based on player choices, adding an intriguing layer to the experience.

This marks Bungie’s first non-Destiny title since 2014, offering a refreshing new venture from the studio. Whether it turns out to be a hit or miss, it promises to be an engaging experience, true to Bungie’s reputation for smooth gameplay. We’ll see how it all unfolds on March 5.

According to Bungie’s lead, Marathon embodies the essence of ’90s futurism, drawing inspiration from iconic PlayStation ads and the unique design of the translucent DualShock controllers.
