Sony Moves Closer to an All-Digital Era by Discontinuing Its Final 4K UHD Player

It looks like Sony is stepping back from the UHD Blu-ray scene, having quietly pulled the plug on its last 4K UHD player. This move is part of a broader trend at Sony, which has been scaling back its investment in hardware and physical media over the past year, leaving fans of tangible media feeling uneasy.

According to a report from a Japanese blog and electronics reseller, sales of the UBP-X700/K are set to end on October 22 in Japan. This player was Sony’s final UHD offering in the region, meaning that the only new UHD player available from the company will now be the PlayStation 5. Panasonic remains the last major electronics manufacturer still producing UHD players. For now, Sony is still offering one model each of DVD and Blu-ray players.

On Sony Japan’s website, the UBP-X700/K UHD 4K player is marked as “Out of stock,” with a note stating that “This item will not be restocked,” which aligns with the earlier report. While it’s unclear if Sony plans to halt production of the X700/K globally, trends in Japan often hint at the company’s future direction worldwide. It seems likely that Sony will soon cease production of dedicated UHD players altogether.

This shift appears to be part of Sony’s broader strategy to divest from electronics manufacturing. Earlier this year, the company sold a significant portion of its TV and hardware production facilities to TCL, which also gained a controlling interest in Sony’s Bravia TV division. Additionally, Sony announced plans to end PlayStation disc production by 2028.

All of this suggests a tough reality for those who cherish owning physical copies of movies and games: the future is leaning heavily towards digital. So, if you’re a fan of physical media, it might be time to hold on tight to your discs. The landscape is changing, and it could get bumpy ahead.
