Sony pulls the plug on another live-service game after five years of operation.

Destruction AllStars was one of the standout titles revealed for the PlayStation 5 during Sony’s “Future of Gaming” event in 2020, marking the debut of the next-gen console. Developed by Lucid Games, it was marketed as an exhilarating sports competition where players engage in high-octane vehicular battles.

Fast forward over five years since its release, and Sony has officially delisted Destruction AllStars, shutting down its multiplayer servers. A notice on the PS5 interface informs players that “Multiplayer services for Destruction AllStars have been taken offline.” Additionally, Destruction Points are no longer available for purchase on the PlayStation Store but can be redeemed until November 25, 2026. Players can still access Arcade mode for solo play.

Initially, Destruction AllStars was set to launch alongside the PS5 at a price of $69.99. However, just weeks before the console’s November 2020 release, Sony postponed the game to February 2021 and significantly reduced its price to $19.99. It was also offered as a bonus for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Despite these changes, the game struggled to impress both critics and players. It holds a mixed average score of 62 on Metacritic, with user ratings even lower at 4.9, indicating a “generally unfavorable” reception. OpenCritic reported that only 10% of critics recommended the game.

A frequent critique of Destruction AllStars was its lack of content, coupled with an abundance of microtransactions. It faced tough competition from free-to-play titles like Rocket League, which had the advantage of being a PlayStation Plus freebie. Many players were also hoping for a successor to Twisted Metal, which the game ultimately did not deliver.

Lucid Games, the studio behind Destruction AllStars, was established in 2011 by former members of Bizarre Creations. They are perhaps best known for Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions and have recently contributed as a support studio for Rare’s Sea of Thieves.

The shutdown of Destruction AllStars is part of a broader trend of live-service game adjustments from PlayStation, following the notable failure of Concord in 2024, the cancellation of the anticipated multiplayer spinoff of The Last of Us in 2023, and the halting of projects from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games.

On Tuesday, Sony communicated the following details to Destruction AllStars owners regarding the game’s closure:

From May 26, 2026, at 14:00 UTC, Destruction AllStars and all associated virtual currency (Destruction Points) will be removed from sale on the PlayStation Store and will no longer be available for purchase.

Single-player modes will remain accessible to existing users until Wednesday, November 25, 2026, at 15:00 UTC, when all server support for Destruction AllStars will cease. After this date, Arcade Mode single-player challenges will still be playable for returning players, though functionality and experience may be affected due to the server shutdown. All other game services will be taken offline.

Players can continue to redeem any virtual currency (Destruction Points) they own within available single-player modes until Wednesday, November 25, 2026, at 15:00 UTC.

Due to ongoing technical issues, multiplayer services for Destruction AllStars on PlayStation 5 consoles will remain offline and are no longer available.

We appreciate the support and enthusiasm of the Destruction AllStars community.
